Brother Tomas Grey — Keeper of Oaths
Brother Tomas Grey is the imposing goliath cleric who serves Grayhaven as its Keeper of Oaths, an officially neutral witness to the town’s most important promises and agreements. He presides over sworn testimony, significant contracts, oaths of office, settlements between disputing parties, and agreements formally entered before the Baron’s court. Tomas speaks slowly and precisely, believing that words freely given should never be offered carelessly. His intimidating size contrasts sharply with his calm demeanor; he seldom raises his voice and takes no side based on wealth, rank, friendship, or reputation. Once an oath has been spoken in his presence, however, he expects it to be honored.
Among Grayhaven’s people, Tomas has become a symbol of trust and impartiality. Merchants sometimes request his presence when negotiating particularly valuable contracts, adventurers may swear agreements before him when large rewards are involved, and public officials traditionally take their oaths of service beneath his watchful gaze. Tomas keeps meticulous records of the promises he witnesses, but he considers the spirit of an oath as important as its exact wording. A common saying around Grayhaven warns anyone tempted to twist an agreement through clever language: “You may fool the parchment, but you won't fool Brother Grey.”
