Description

Grassvein is a small agricultural village lying beyond the more settled lands surrounding Grayhaven, where cultivated fields begin surrendering to rolling grasslands and the edge of the great forest.

The village takes its name from the strange ribbons of unusually dark green grass that run through the surrounding countryside like veins beneath the earth. These “green veins” remain lush even during dry summers and have made the soil surrounding Grassvein remarkably fertile.

Grassvein itself is built around a broad central green rather than a formal town square. Timber-and-stone cottages, barns, workshops, fenced paddocks, and vegetable gardens spread outward without much concern for straight streets. Most buildings have thatched or wooden-shingle roofs, and nearly every household keeps chickens, goats, sheep, pigs, or some combination thereof.

A modest wooden palisade protects the oldest portion of the village, though much of Grassvein has grown beyond it. During dangerous times, livestock and villagers from the surrounding farms are brought inside.

Travelers often notice that Grassvein feels quieter than Grayhaven. There are no crowded markets, dockworkers shouting over cargo, or adventurers filling taverns with exaggerated stories.

Here, people notice strangers.

And strangers are remembered.

Brief History

Grassvein began roughly 120 years ago as a collection of homesteads established by settlers moving outward from the territory that would eventually become firmly controlled by Grayhaven.

The first settlers discovered that certain strips of land produced unusually strong harvests. Crops planted along the green veins grew taller, livestock grazing there remained healthier, and medicinal herbs appeared in unusual abundance.

The scattered farms gradually became a permanent settlement.

Grassvein's importance increased when Grayhaven grew into a major frontier community. The village became one of the settlements helping feed Grayhaven's expanding population, particularly supplying grain, vegetables, livestock, wool, herbs, honey, and smoked meat.

About sixty years ago, Grassvein suffered its darkest period during what villagers call the Red Harvest.

A large raiding force descended upon the surrounding farms during harvest season. Several homesteads were burned before villagers barricaded themselves inside the old palisade. Messengers reached Grayhaven, whose soldiers and adventurers eventually drove the attackers away.

The village recovered, but the event permanently shaped its people.

Nearly every farmhouse now has somewhere defensible to retreat, and almost every adult knows how to use a bow, spear, axe, or crossbow.

Grassvein may look peaceful.

Its residents have learned that peaceful places sometimes need defending.
