The Watch of Saint Avarren was once one of the most respected organizations on the western frontier of Valedorn. Founded by the knight now remembered as Saint Avarren, the Watch was established to protect travelers, settlers, and isolated communities from the dangers of the wilderness. Its members were not merely soldiers. They included scouts, priests, healers, hunters, and experienced woodsmen who patrolled remote roads, escorted caravans, hunted dangerous beasts, and maintained fortified waystations where travelers could find food, shelter, and safety.
For generations, the Watch helped make settlement of the frontier possible. Small forts and watchtowers were established along important roads, river crossings, and wilderness trails, and communities often grew around them. GrayHaven itself benefited greatly from these patrols in its earliest years, when the settlement was little more than a collection of buildings beside the river. Old local stories tell of Watch riders bringing medicine during harsh winters, rescuing travelers lost in the forests, and defending early settlers from raiders and monsters. Because of this, Saint Avarren remains especially respected among guards, travelers, scouts, and those who live beyond the safety of Valedorn's larger cities.
As Valedorn expanded and towns such as GrayHaven became stronger, the Watch slowly declined. Roads became safer, local guards were established, and nobles increasingly relied upon their own soldiers instead of independent frontier protectors. Watch stations were gradually abandoned, sold, or simply forgotten. By the time GrayHaven had become a fortified frontier town, only a few members of the old order remained in the region. Eventually even they disappeared, leaving behind ruined towers, old roads, weathered monuments, and countless stories.
Although the Watch no longer officially exists, its legacy remains strong in GrayHaven. Members of the town guard still use traditions believed to have originated with Saint Avarren's followers, while the Witchbriar Rangers perform many of the wilderness duties once carried out by the Watch. Travelers sometimes leave a copper coin at the small shrine to Saint Avarren in the Temple of the Dawn before venturing beyond the town walls. Throughout the frontier, ruined Watch posts can still be found hidden among the forests and hills, and adventurers occasionally discover old equipment, forgotten maps, and other relics bearing the Watch's traditional symbol: a single lantern burning above a dark horizon.
