Witchbriar Rangers
“Eyes Beyond the Walls"
Description
The Witchbriar Rangers are the eyes, ears, and first line of defense for GrayHaven beyond its walls. While the City Guard protects the streets, gates, markets, and people within GrayHaven, the Rangers patrol the forests, hills, river trails, abandoned roads, and wilderness surrounding the settlement.
The Rangers take their name from Witchbriar, a vicious plant common to the wild country around GrayHaven. Its long, hardened thorns are sharp enough to slice through cloth and leather and can open flesh almost as cleanly as a sword. Travelers who stumble blindly into a mature patch can suffer terrible injuries before they manage to free themselves.
Like the plant for which they are named, the Witchbriar Rangers have a reputation for being difficult to see until someone has already wandered into their reach. They are scouts, trackers, hunters, wilderness guides, messengers, and skirmishers. Rangers frequently travel alone or in small teams, sometimes remaining outside GrayHaven for days at a time.
Although they work closely with the GrayHaven City Guard, the Rangers are not members of the Guard. The distinction is well understood locally: the Guard protects what is inside the walls; the Rangers watch what is beyond them.
Around a score of Rangers — roughly twenty men and women of various peoples — are normally active around GrayHaven at any given time, although their exact number is difficult for ordinary citizens to determine. Some may be weeks away scouting trails, watching known monster territory, escorting travelers, or investigating trouble.
Travelers entering GrayHaven sometimes discover that the Rangers knew they were coming long before the guards at the gate did.
Their commonly repeated oath is:
“The wall keeps the people safe. The wilds keep the wall standing.”
A shorter saying frequently associated with the Rangers is:
“No threat shall grow beyond the walls.”
Insignia
The Witchbriar Rangers use a silver thorned branch shaped like an upward-pointing arrow over a deep forest-green field.
A circular thorn-vine surrounds the branch.
The upward branch represents vigilance, scouting, and the Rangers' duty to locate threats before those threats reach GrayHaven. The surrounding Witchbriar represents both the wilderness they patrol and the protective barrier the Rangers create around the settlement.
The insignia commonly appears as:
- A cloak clasp or brooch
- A leather or metal pendant
- An embroidered shoulder or breast emblem
- A carved symbol on bows, quivers, walking staffs, and equipment
- A small mark carved into trees or trail posts to leave coded messages for other Rangers
Experienced woodsmen around GrayHaven know that a small three-thorn mark carved discreetly into a tree usually means a Witchbriar Ranger has passed that way recently.
Relationship With the GrayHaven City Guard
The division of responsibility is extremely clear.
Inside the walls: GrayHaven City Guard.
Outside the walls: Witchbriar Rangers.
The Guard handles criminal investigations, disturbances, gate security, arrests, market patrols, and maintaining order within GrayHaven.
The Rangers handle wilderness threats, scouting, missing travelers, monsters, bandits, dangerous wildlife, suspicious movements, caravan routes, and reconnaissance.
Neither organization normally interferes with the other's authority.
There is considerable professional respect between them, although individual Guards and Rangers occasionally argue over exactly where one organization's responsibility ends and the other's begins.
A common joke among Rangers is:
“If you can see a tavern, it's probably the Guard's problem.”

Witchbriar
Witchbriar grows throughout portions of the wilderness surrounding GrayHaven.
A mature plant forms dense tangles of dark vines covered in long, extremely hard thorns.
The thorns are capable of:
- Cutting clothing
- Slicing exposed skin
- Damaging leather
- Entangling animals
- Severely injuring someone who struggles after becoming trapped
Experienced Rangers can move through Witchbriar territory surprisingly well.
They also occasionally manipulate existing patches into natural defensive barriers, concealed trails, warning systems, or traps.
Locals sometimes claim the Rangers actually cultivate Witchbriar around secret camps.
The Rangers neither confirm nor deny this.
Ranger Trail Signs
The Witchbriar Rangers maintain their own system of wilderness markings.
Most are deliberately subtle.
Examples include arrangements of stones, bent twigs, shallow cuts in bark, braided grass, and small thorn symbols.
Possible meanings include:
One Thorn: Safe trail.
Two Thorns: Rangers operating nearby.
Three Thorns: Ranger message or cache nearby.
Broken Thorn: Danger ahead.
Thorn inside a circle: Do not proceed without Ranger authorization.
Three downward thorns: Severe threat; return toward GrayHaven immediately.
Most outsiders cannot distinguish Ranger signs from ordinary trail damage.
