Captain Mara Thornshield
Captain Mara Thornshield is the hard-eyed dwarven commander of Grayhaven’s 140-member town guard, a veteran whose armor has seen more campaigns than many of her guards have seen winters. She is disciplined, practical, and famously humorless while on duty; townsfolk joke that if Captain Thornshield ever smiles during her watch, everyone should immediately check whether the walls are on fire. Despite her intimidating manner, she has earned considerable respect among both guards and citizens. She expects competence, despises unnecessary cruelty, and applies the law with the same stubborn consistency regardless of a person’s wealth or station.
At her side hangs an imposing enchanted warhammer, an old and visibly battle-worn weapon whose faintly glowing runes have inspired plenty of tavern stories. Mara rarely discusses the hammer or the campaigns in which she carried it, though veterans occasionally recognize old military insignia among the marks engraved into its head. When trouble threatens Grayhaven, Mara is seldom found directing matters from behind a desk—she is usually at the gate, on the wall, or marching directly toward whatever has given everyone else a reason to run the other way.
