The Crooked Quill

GrayHaven, Locations, World Lore

The Crooked Quill is one of those places in GrayHaven that seems far larger once you step inside. Narrow shelves climb nearly to the ceiling, packed with books, journals, maps, ledgers, and loose bundles of parchment. Some are neatly organized, others are stacked wherever there happens to be room. A few battered chairs sit near a small iron stove, and a long table in the center of the shop is usually occupied by someone reading, copying notes, or arguing quietly over an old map.

The shop is run by Mira, an older female gnome with silver-streaked hair, round spectacles, and a habit of speaking faster whenever the subject turns to history, ruins, strange languages, or forgotten places. She sells books when she can, but over the years the Crooked Quill has also become GrayHaven’s unofficial library. Locals are allowed to borrow common books, travelers can pay to copy maps or reference material, and adventurers are often surprised by just how much useful information Mira has managed to collect.

Sharing the shop with her is Mr. Tibbles, a large gray cat who behaves as though the building belongs to him and Mira merely works there. He spends most of his days sleeping on whatever book someone is trying to read, stalking between the shelves, or staring suspiciously at visitors from some high perch. Regular customers swear that Mira trusts Mr. Tibbles’ opinion of people more than she admits.

For anyone looking for information about GrayHaven, the surrounding frontier, old settlements, local legends, or forgotten ruins, the Crooked Quill is often one of the best places to begin. Just remember one important rule: if Mira loans you a book, bring it back in the same condition you received it. She is remarkably forgiving about many things. Damaged books are not one of them.
