The Hearthstone Boarding House stands on a quieter GrayHaven street between the bustle of the market and the river wards. Unlike the town’s inns and taverns, the Hearthstone caters to those planning to stay for weeks, months, or even years. Its three-story timber-and-stone building is plain but welcoming, with warm hearths, clean rooms, sturdy furniture, and the constant smell of bread, stew, or something roasting in the kitchen. Merchants, craftsmen, apprentices, miners, clerks, and the occasional adventurer all find their way here when they need something more permanent than a rented bed for the night.
The boarding house is owned and operated by Mara Grunnhold, a broad-shouldered, middle-aged half-orc woman known to most tenants simply as Ma Grunnhold. Mara keeps the Hearthstone orderly with little more than a level stare, a well-kept ledger, and the expectation that everyone living beneath her roof will behave like a decent neighbor. She is firm about rent, noise, fighting, theft, and damage to the house, but she is also known for quietly helping tenants who have fallen on genuine hard times. More than one resident has worked off a late payment by chopping wood, repairing a fence, or helping in the kitchen.
Most tenants gather for breakfast and supper in the common dining room, making the Hearthstone feel less like an inn and more like a strange extended household. Stories, gossip, arguments, friendships, and business deals are regularly exchanged over bowls of porridge or thick evening stew. The residents come from every corner of GrayHaven and beyond, and it is not uncommon to find a dwarven mason sharing a table with a traveling scholar, a merchant, or a pair of adventurers discussing their latest expedition.
Those who live at the Hearthstone soon discover that very little happens beneath its roof without Mara eventually hearing about it. She does not consider herself a gossip, and she rarely speaks about another tenant’s private affairs without good reason. Still, if someone disappears, begins receiving strange visitors, suddenly comes into money, or starts behaving as though they are being watched, Mara Grunnhold is often one of the first people in GrayHaven to notice.
