The Crooked Wand is one of GrayHaven’s more unusual shops, tucked into a narrow, slightly leaning building along an older market street. A crooked wooden staff hangs above the door, decorated with tiny brass bells that sometimes chime even when the air is still. The front windows are crowded with bottles, candles, crystals, feathers, bundles of dried herbs, carved charms, and dozens of other oddities. A hand-painted sign advertises spell components, charms, minor enchantments, potions, and “practical magic for practical people.”
Inside, the shop is cramped, colorful, and nearly overflowing. Shelves stretch toward the ceiling, packed with jars of powders, polished stones, dried plants, bits of bone, coils of copper wire, incense, candles, tiny bells, colored sand, and countless other ingredients used by spellcasters. Scattered among them are small enchanted trinkets meant for ordinary folk as well: self-tying bootlaces, ever-warm mugs, glowing pocket charms, enchanted quills, weather stones, and other simple magical conveniences. The whole place smells of old parchment, cedar smoke, herbs, candle wax, and whatever happens to be simmering in the back room.
The shop is owned by an eccentric elf named Ithildren Quillbranch, though nearly everyone calls him Ith. Tall, thin, silver-haired, and usually dressed in a confusing mixture of robes, scarves, aprons, belts, and mismatched boots, Ith has a habit of turning simple questions into long explanations about magical theory. Despite his wandering conversations and odd habits, he has a reputation for knowing his trade extremely well. Spellcasters often come to him for common reagents, while townsfolk visit for inexpensive charms, minor magical items, or help with strange objects they have found.
Among GrayHaven’s citizens, The Crooked Wand is considered equal parts useful shop, curiosity, and local institution. Children like to stare through the windows at moving toys and glowing stones, adventurers often stop in before leaving the city, and more than a few households own some small enchanted object purchased from Ith over the years. Locals generally trust the elf, though there is a common saying among those who know him well: “If Ith says it is perfectly safe, ask him how many times he tested it.”
